Very difficult to win a guerilla war. We used the wrong tactics in Vietnam. You can't fight a guy that is willing to live in a hole in the ground on a bowl of rice a day. Waiting till dark to come out and shell you. Some of their tunnel entrances were barely 12 inches wide. Nam was like taking the boy scouts for an outing in east LA. What a waste. "Smart tactics" could have turned Vietnam into a pre Castro Cuba like casino royale. It was all about the war...all about the money...all about careers and politics. What's going on in Vietnam today? That ought to give you a clue. Market reforms. And if communism is so bad, then why are we shipping all of our jobs to China? Why are they holding a large percentage of our debt? You have to really be able to look around corners to understand the rhetoric.
