SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Applied Materials Inc. after Wednesday's closing bell said it has amended its corporate governance guidelines to implement a majority voting policy for electing directors. "Today's action increases our Board's accountability to our stockholders by formalizing the consequences in the event a director receives a majority of withheld votes," said Applied Materials Chief Executive Mike Splinter in a statement. Directors at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip equipment maker are currently elected to serve 1-year terms.
