"Clinton was actually making a stab at paying down debt."

Yeah, I remember the debate about what Clinton should do with the surplus, and one thing he was considering was putting it against the debt. Greenspan weighed in by saying that paying down the debt "too fast" would be bad!

Later, Greenspan actually advised people to get ARM mortgages instead of fixed-rate mortgages! Go figure..

Clinton decided to pass the surplus on to Bush ( I'm sure he regrets that NOW, but who knew THEN what Bush would do with it? ) Bush gave 90% back to his rich cronies, and sent the rest of us $300 checks (checks that were really just ADVANCES on upcoming refunds we'd get anyway!), because it was "our money".

Followed of course, by both the deficit and the debt skyrocketing under Bush, as they continue to do to this day. No one is paying much attention though, since Bush's OTHER failures are so much more newsworthy!
