The religious element enters into discussions of capitol punishment because every religion and every ethical system takes a position on if, whether, when, and how, it is permissible to kill another human being.

Same with assisted suicide, abortion, euthanasia, war, and other serious issues.

I would suggest that people need to be able to take a few steps backwards, identify their own beliefs, understand that these are not the only possible beliefs, and search for common ground.
