Who would be the bigger coward? War is a whole lot more fun when it is done with lasar-guided bombs and you get to watch the enemy killed anonymously from a distance. It is also a lot more fun when you can dehumanize another group by calling them all crazies without looking at the broader context of what is going on and failing to look in the mirror once in a while. Crazies are everywhere -- we had one in Montreal this week -- but when you get crazies on two sides stirring things up against broad groups rather than subsets of groups or even individuals, then the problems multiply exponentially. I don't want to be on the other side of stirring things up with Arabs, Muslims, or anyone else for that matter. Some parts of the world have some hardened, desparate, tribal-minded fanatics whose most effective attacks are terrorism, and other parts of the word have fat, spoiled, tribal-minded fanatics of a more elevated kind whose outlet is to support state terrorism against other peoples. By state terrorism, I'm talking about attacking whole countries and their entire populations -- Iraq, Lebanon, Iran?... Syria?... to try to cut out some perceived cancer with a surgical tool as effective as a sledge-hammer. Arab fanatics? Islamic fanatics? Any fanatics? Let's keep them out of our country if we can but let's ensure that we remain on the high moral ground and not be fanatics ourselves.
