Of course they don't pay taxes, they don't make a profit. Are you going to assert that insurance company profit (and yes the taxes they have to pay on that profit) are not a part of the cost of medical care? What about the huge executive salaries for insurance companies?

re: There are some things that the private sector may be effectively unable to provide, but its hard to think of any broad areas where that it could easily provide but where the federal government could almost certainly provide a better combination of price, speed, and quality.
