I have heard that complaint. I have also heard a complaint that combines card playing and chess playing.

The latter complaint is that it is either (idle) unproductive activity, so it is wasteful, or that it is combative play that leads to real character problems and animus among brethren.

I consider it neither. Among good sports, these activities hone abilities and strengthen relationships and raise the general knowledge/skills of participants.
