Make sure of the ease of use. Find someone who has actually used the scanner to relate their experience. I have a HP Flatbed scanner with a slide adapter, and it is a pain to use. The quality of the reproductions are not all that good so I too would like to find something better, but apparently there is not that big a market for slide reproductions.

Scans of slides

I researched this heavily 8 years ago. At that time any apparently creditable device to produce a good quality JPG from a slide was around $190 -- so the price has come down a bit.

There were other devices, both commercially available and from DIY plans to make a light box, get a lense, and make a scan of a slide using a regular page scanner. Nobody could demonstrate that good results were obtained using attachments to a regular flat bed scanner.

Eight years ago I needed 50 slides on a CD for an Air Force Russian Language class reunion. Although I couldn't attend the fellows said my contribution, all those great photos on a CD, was the "hit" of the reunion. I made several other copies of the CD and passed them on to those interested. To get those slides onto a CD cost me $1.50 @ but for this event it was worth the $75 I invested.

I guess I will cull through the rest of my slides and select the best and pay the local photo shop to do to them as they did the other batch several years ago. Their software on the CD allows to select individual pictures and copy their images onto a hard drive or to do a slide show that runs and repeats itself as desired. Neat!!
