Would it not be more accurate to phrase it this way: "It was Pope Urban II who first disseminated to the general public the idea of a Crusade to recapture* the Holy Land with the famous words: "Deus vult!" ("God wills it!")*"? After all, the Muslims conquered that territory by force, and forced Christians to "convert" to Islam or die, and otherwise enslaved them. I've never understood why present-day Muslims are still so pissed off about the Crusades. Seems to me they were a case of "what goes around, comes around." Or, "he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword."
