They are not richer just deeper in debt.

i was talking about general wealth. people are obviously much wealthier today in many ways--longevity, live births, nutrition, education level, plumbing, heating, nutrition, etc. at the most basic level, the amount of labor time required to procure a day's worth of food is a small fraction of the requirement 100 years ago.

even the average bankrupt Joe Sixpack today lives a wealthier life than the aristocrats of bygone ages.
