I do think that the Islamic countries have been acting like spoiled children

There are a lot of identity groups that sometimes act like spoiled children. Whatcha gonna do? There's no way to disabuse any of them of the notion that everything is an insult. Telling them that they are overreacting just makes things worse. I don't know anything to do about it other than manage it until they grow up, which happens over time, lotsa time.

What really irritates me is how the rest of the world is cowering in the face of their tantrums. I don't see why Islam should be treated any differently than any other religion

So, what does "manage it" mean in this context? One way, I suppose, is to keep on doing our cultural thing, which is to insult all religions, free speech and all that and hope they come to understand over time that it's nothing personal. Another way, I suppose, is to be sensitive to their cultural differences, which is that they don't value free speech and they don't like pictures of the Big Guy.

This problem is no different, in concept, than the problem with Some Christians who think that Christianity is under attack. They come out of the woodwork every Christmas. So, Walmart can either let the Salvation Army ring its bells out front or not. Hopefully the problem will fade away over time.
