"After a thousand years or so, get over it."

I will NOT get over it. I'm still upset about how the Romans treated the Germanic tribes. Damn those Romans anyway.

"I know people who still flip out over the Civil War ...

Many people don't flip out because they don't identify with the primary identifiers associated with the Civil War. That is Plantation economy dependent on a slave industry. Some people might flip out because the government supported carpet bagging theft of family property and wealth which has left them with damage to this day... or for other justifiable reasons.

"...but nobody who flips out over, say, the 1066 Norman invasion of England."

The Norman invasion of England? Who is there living today that has their economy, relations, principles, values and personal autonomy threatened by that event?

"After a thousand years or so, get over it."

The identities, cultures, attitudes of people living today are impacted by the circumstances that motivated the Crusades. Much of the attitude is still being expressed in viable global cultures today. By people like you for example. Jerusalem is heavily impacted by that and much of the world's subsocieties are concerned if not directly involved as stake holders.

"They just can't control themselves, they have to flip out over something."

Certainly there was some hard feelings over the cartoon stuff but not everybody has been socialized in a culture that has no limits on this sort of thing. Some cultures have different values systems and would never permit stuff like the 'Piss Christ' display, or defamation of Mohammed media.

Them vs us doesn't really cover that issue too well.

When you stop flipping out, perhaps it will seem less like everybody else is.
