On Tuesday, Benedict, quoting from an obscure Medieval text, cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam's founder, as "evil and inhuman."

Did you see this brouhaha about the Pope and Islam? Let me say I think the Muslim uproar over these comments is overdone but why in hell was the Pope talking about this text? I have read the news reports which say he didn't intend to suggest Muslims are violent but what other takeaway is there?
