Your faith that Co2 is overall a good thing is touching. I'll not revisit that.

Why would shifting to heavier crudes, coal, & shale reduce CO2 emmissions? They have a higher carbon to hydrogen ratio, each kilojoule of heat will release more Co2, and the greater processing you mention will require more energy and thus more Co2. All this seems to be happening now; interest in American coal and Canadian oil-sands for examples.

I do agree with you that carbon taxes are an efficient way of limiting emissions. How was France?
