I don't mind not calling them rebels. We can call them the moral equivalent of our founding fathers, if you like :-) My point is only that where there is an indigenous population totally against an occupying power, and committed to it's defeat, the occupying power will never defeat the indigenous population, unless it is willing to kill them all. I think killing an entire population can work- which is probably why genocide crops up so often in human culture. No doubt it can be a successful evolutionary strategy. I don't think it's one we ought to explore in modern society, but clearly it has worked in the past, and even in the recent past.
