There has unfortunately been a lot of fraud in evolutionary science. Piltdown man was a ridiculous fraud that everybody in the field bought into for decades. The black/gray moth study in England was a fraud too. Though it made a modest claim that almost anyone would accept.

The fraud doesn't mean that common descent of all life on earth is wrong, it just shows what happens when scientists over-reach to try to prove a point - in this case that evolution explains everything about life.

IMO common descent is a powerful argument for divine intervention in the creation of life.

Being an Atheist requires an act of faith I agree.
