Islam right now has something in common, it would seem, with Protestantism in that neither speaks with a single voice. With Catholicism you have a hierarchy and a final authority. With the others you have a whole lot of different perspectives. Each religion stays within a range, but it's a pretty broad range.

A lot depends on the culture in which the sect operates. If the culture is a liberal democracy, you get a tendency towards one part of the range across religions. If the culture is barbaric, as in is in parts of the ME, you get a different part of the range. Religion and culture are not independent, but they are not exactly the same thing. I would expect Islam to be more mellow when practiced within a liberal democracy.
