It's probably because they had designed an interface that didn't require multibutton mice.

Now, given the prevalence of multibutton third-party mice, as well as some from Apple, the OS does support multibutton functionality, though it can still be easily used with a single button.

The current notebooks do have some functionality that their PC counterparts don't, such as the two finger scrolling, which do make their trackpads more like multibutton devices. You can also enable an option where placing two buttons on the trackpad and clicking the button works as a right-click.

Really? My MBP has a dual tap trackpad.
