"We need to charge these guys who kidnap, imprison, and rape teenagers, as heinous criminals who get whatever is the maximum in that state. I would be OK with the death penalty on this one."

That's sensible. Lots of times, just the words "sex offender" unleashes all sorts of illogical rhetoric. People can be labeled a "sex offender" by a spouse during a custody battle, and often get stuck with the label even when unsupported by facts. I'm reminded of that child care facility somewhere on the West Coast where the staff was accused of all sorts of outrageous things by the children, with help from "professional" social workers indulging their own fantasies. It took over 20 years for those people to finally get out of prison and clear their names.

For some reason, society WANTS to believe the worst about people. And the more prurient, the more anxious they are to believe.

But, Gem, I'm in agreement with you on this -- for those who do harm to others, there needs to be some really harsh punishment. And some studies have shown that there's no rehabilitation for some offenders. Those people need to be weeded out of society for life.
