True. But it raises the dilemma, for a new user do you set them on the new path or the old path?

If they then use an older Windoz computer or a competitor like Mac or Linux they will be confused.

Microsoft did this of course, not to help the user, but to confuse them and improve Microsoft's profits. There is no measurable improvement in the user experience. But it does encourage upgrades and discourage change to better OS systems.

MOST of what Microsoft does is to lock in newbie or light users. Exactly what you accuse Mac users of being. These light users become adverse to growth or change and live in fear of "deleting something important."

I remember Microsoft trumpeting a new software as "for the user." It checked to see if the OS was Pirated. You could argue this was for the user but you'd have to be brain dead and stretching the truth. It was obviously designed to improve Microsoft's profits. It's development had nothing to do with the user experience. However Microsoft had no qualms about presenting it as a "benefit to users."

Most of what APPLE does is to improve the user experience, even if they don't always succeed.

Myself I hate XP, I remain on W2K like what 40% of business users? I hate the DRM system. I hate the stupid changes that don't benefit me. I will probably abandon Windows when I go Mac/Intel. Wine will do it well enough for me. BEGONE WINDOWS!

Linux actually looks more favorable. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. I like the idea. The price is right. If Novell regains sanity they could make it usable enough. But really OSX is fine after the initial outlay for the hardware. And the hardware is reasonably superior to obliviate the need to save a few bucks at this point. DRM on a Mac would change that though.

Personally I think any business that standardizes on Windows is stupid and in danger of getting it's ass whipped by a smarter competitor.
