Putting CO2 in the hole where the oil came from isn't going to use more than a little of it. A litre of heavy oil produces a LOT of CO2, even in liquid phase. I forget the ratio, but it's a lot more.

That makes sense - a lot more molecules, each demanding its space. I had assumed naively that there would be surplus space left underground.
