I really wonder whether democracy is necessary for capitalism to flourish.

Certainly not.. In fact, capitalism is a dictatorial system ruled by an Oligopoly.. essentially the "Golden Rule".. He who has the gold.. rules...

I had a professor many years ago who asked us what the difference was between Capitalism and Communism.. And, of course, various people started quoting Marx and Adam Smith.. blah.. blah..

Finally he stopped us and said we were all incorrect.. He said the difference between the two is that..

..under Capitalism, Man exploits Man..

..Under Communism.. it's the other way around..

That truism has always stuck with me...

But what I DO BELIEVE is that Capitalism is the preferable economic model. However, it must be "harnessed" to service Democracy.. not the other way around. There is simply no such thing as a legitimate "capitalist" government if there is no democratic system that holds that government accountable to the people being governed.

Non-democratic governments can assert that they are legitimate, but unless there is a democratic electoral mechanism where the governed can provide their approval and concurrence, it's merely a facade of legitmacy.

That's the heart to my logic regarding governments.
