Didn't the oil companies consolidate so they could eliminate competition and get better prices from suppliers?

When HP bought Compaq, they suddenly were able to know the lowest priced parts from both companies... so if Compaq was getting a better deal on memory from Micron, HP would expand the Compaq order to get the price for its HP line... and vice versa.

It is one reason monopolies are illegal.... you can put your suppliers out of business then buy their assets for lower prices then undercut any remaining competition for your own products.
