I'm opposed to it too, but not because I think it doesn't work. As much as I hate to agree with McCain, I think it a) hardens the resistance of our opponents, and b) goes against the moral fabric of what the US is supposed to represent.

I can remember, as a little kid in the '50s, people talking about how terrible the "Jerries and Japs" were because of their torture. I don't doubt that, since we won the war, American atrocities were forgotten and glossed over, but the morality issue remains. I think in a war of ideas such as we're engaged in, we should project a strong moral image. Torture, while it might produce some immediate benefits, will work against us in the end.
