While the prime minister is in New York, the military in Thailand is launching a coup against him.
At least 14 tanks are circling his office, leading the prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, to declare a state of emergency. He's now at the United Nations for the General Assembly meeting.

A TV station in Thailand carried an announcement that something called the "Council of Administrative Reform" had seized power in
the capital of Bangkok and nearby provinces, without resistance.

The broadcast said the country's 78-year-old king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-serving monarch, was put in charge.

In a busy commercial district of Bangkok, four tanks rumbled through the streets, warning people to stay inside. Soldiers are patrolling a major tourist hotel.

A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, says the Thai army's commander-in-chief used the military to seize
power from the prime minister, who has been accused of corruption.
