i think you are right about that, brian, however i would also say that to me it appears that the islamists have been jonesing for a 'religious' war for YEARS, goading the west over and over with terrorist attacks (which basically were proxy war tactics stemming from islamic states which recognize that any full on, straightforward attack against western democracy would result in their annilation)... then came 9/11 and the bush doctrine which was basically a declaration of war against the terrorists and the states that harbor them (nice rhetoric at the time, but considering our tepid response to the nuclear aspirations of iran, i think we are back to business as usual) unfortunately, i think we have lost our political will since 9/11 to launch any full on attack on islamofasicsm and have allowed the politicians and even worse, state department to run the war against the islamist/jihadists, iow, the PC kid gloves are on, and as we know wrt islamists, NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED.... hence, sadly, expect another 9/11 style attack with thousands dead before we regain our political will to give them the religious war they aspire to and win

But there is the rage that is building up as Americans are killed in Iraq, and as all kinds of things have happened since. And this is the pope, Look at the reaction when kennedy was killed. And there were not calls for Kennedy's death from all over the globe. Now you have people all over the world, including some of the people who taught terrorism the IRA looking at islam with all new eyes. An assassination of the Spiritual leader of the Catholic Church will cause riots, and see people responding to Islam just as islam has responded to the Pope. Discrimination against Muslims is said to have gone up after 9/11. Muslims should expect that the violence will be explosive in places like France where there are already problems. People are already angered with islam, many people are tired of hearing about suicide bombers and terrorists and fattwas and all the death, destruction and hatred that islam brings to the table. They only need a spark.
