Then define discussion -- does the center not have views on the issues of the day? I would say the disengagement of the center is the central issue of the center itself. That is why we are so dominated by the extremes -- the center did not want to make itself heard. You might say that it is the extreme nature of the discussion that drives aware those in the center -- disgust with the tone is no doubt one reason for disengagement. But like it or not, the center needs to be able to stand up and be counted, else it is irrelevant and the loud voices rule.
