That could tax you for formally belonging to some organization, or they could tax church attendance. They could also request you (or even pressure or try to force you) to state a religious affiliation and than tax some possible affiliation while not taxing or even subsidizing others.

Yes, and as I understand it, in Germany they do tax you in order to subsidize churches, and remarkably (or maybe not) official church membership in Germany is quite low.

My own actions would depend primarily on the official position of the Church. If they wanted us to pay, I'd probably pay. If they wanted us to resist, I'd probably resist. It comes under the heading of "render unto Caesar," I suppose.

But if the tax was part of a pattern of systematic repression, as Christians suffer in other countries, I might just keep my beliefs private.
