"So what DID the ones who were sensible say?"

I am not a spokesperson for 'sensibility' in Catholicism (a topic even devout Catholics could have debates over).

However here is something like what I heard that I found easily digestable.

Clearly human beings stumble and fail without good role models.

So here comes Jesus: We (believers) have no explanation for his model of human perfection, as he was blessed to live a sinless life with the power to perform supernatural miracles, while presenting himself as a model for all human beings, except that it should come from God.

... And since we human beings seem incapable of doing well or being well with out good role models, this perfect one must be according to divine design.

The spirit of righteousness does not align with the other Earthly nature easily, as survival of the fittest would have us prey on the weak rather than having compassion and giving charity to their benefit and as a sacrifice to our own material comforts. Yet we find that when we adhere to the scriptural teachings in the spirit of goodness, we often experience joy even in this life time, as a reward.

Jesus was a model of living with this spirit as his guide and his message. The Way of life is the Way Jesus modeled it so Jesus had it all and becomes the Way of salvation, if you have ears to hear and eyes to see the sacredness of his Way. The three come together here.

I'm not a Catholic and probably many Catholics would have problems with that explanation, or may want to extend it to another level that I would be less comfortable with.

It seemed sensible to me.
