oh yeah, that book.

didn't read it i'm afraid, but i like him, if for no other reason, he's one of the few employed thoughtful journalists, right or wrong.

i do think his premise, on the face of it is far too catastrophic. meaning, he could have highlighted why the encouragement of individual thought/opinion in a "free" environment could or would be an antidote to what he describes, seemingly quite well in the synopsis linked.

rebellion isn't just an anti west or anti religious activity he seems to forget. lest we forget viet nam for example in the modern last half century vs. the prior half century with all of its horror.

JS Mill still resonates in my mind as an outstanding and still living thesis worthy of a guide book.

or we get walden pond otoh, a book never conceived with so many unintended potential consequences.
