When you think about it, why do we have a system where people shorting stocks can be forced to cover through no negative action of their own (e.g. margin call)? There's no equivalent on the long side. That's inherently unfair. The *only* reason why we put up with this is because that's the way it has always been. It's because we accept the notion that shorting is, and should be, akin to entering a borrowing lottery, where the the share of stock you are given can make or break you depending on its owner. That's absurd.
