Taking my shoes off to get on an aircraft isn't a big deal to me. The totalitarian aspect of airport hassles is low on my radar for bureaucratic repression. It is more annoying to me that I can't alter my own vegetation, fill in a swamp, get some sand from a beach and all sorts of things.

Now that China has ditched some of their more absurd ideas, it's not surprising that they are rapidly narrowing the gap between their poverty and the rest of the world's mediocrity.

It would not be difficult to do much better than other countries if they improve rules continually.

There's no reason that such a totalitarian country can't actually do really, really well. Democracy is naturally faulty, with one crowd voting to take things from the others. At least with totalitarianism, that can be avoided [until they inevitably develop their sense of entitlement and go over the top].

It would be remarkable if China does good things in the long run [say for 40 years]. Reversion to the mean [and nasty] will be too tempting.
