IC designers have a rosy outlook for the PC market in the fourth quarter because of good order visibility for September and October—an indication that PC vendors expect a strong Christmas shopping season, according to industry sources.

Sources with a major quartz oscillator maker pointed out that first-tier PC vendors waited until September for further CPU price drops before placing orders for the Christmas season. In turn, component suppliers have seen the OEMs and ODMs for the vendors place rush orders in large volumes this month, the sources said. The current wave of strong demand is expected to continue into October.

Some other sources pointed out that IC demand has picked up significantly in September because prices for desktops and notebooks have reached very low levels and inventories at brand-name vendors and channels are low.

They noted that if IC designers fail to see significant increase in revenues for September and October, it usually means that their PC clients are conservative about the fourth quarter. But if IC designers enjoy strong growth in September and October, it usually is an indication that their clients are confident about Christmas demand, the sources pointed out.

So far, many IC designers have reported strong order visibility for September and October, and they expect record sales in September, the sources pointed out, adding that it is a promising sign.

IC designers also expect strong sales in November and December, the two months during which PC clients will place orders to meet Chinese New Year demand at the beginning of next year, the sources said.
