Rome - The Rome prosecutor's office on Wednesday said it was launching an investigation into death threats made against Pope Benedict XVI by Muslim extremist groups.

The head of the office's anti-terrorism department, Franco Ionta, said the investigation would centre on statements that incited people to, "take part in a criminal organisation, an attack against a head of state and massacre."

As well as being head of the Roman Catholic Church, the pope is also head of state of the Vatican.

The investigation follows the publication on the Internet on Monday of death threats to the pope by several Iraqi extremist factions, including the Iraqi wing of Al-Qaeda.

The threat's followed the pope's recent controversial speech in Germany, where he appeared to link Islam with violence.

Since the threats were published, security levels have been raised both at the Vatican and at the pope's summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, on the outskirts of Rome. - Sapa-AFP
