CB, As is more than evident with the current Islamic fascists, I was convinced yrs ago that adherence to one particular religion instills a fervent "team spirit" that has been responsible for many wars over the centuries. In fact, up until 9/11, I had become religion neutral.

My interest is focused more on world history and the evolution of religions over the past 2000yrs as part of the overall timeline of history, than on specific religious beliefs. As a History buff, it means more to me that the RCC can trace it's origins to the beginning of recorded history, than the fact I was born into it. Sept 11 was a stark awakening to the reality that much of the world continues to be mired in the MidEastern dogmatic clerics fight for their own preservation. Sadly the Islamic masses are caught in the crossfire--it's a flashback to medieval times.

IMO, a tradition of personal philosophy rather than specific religious observance would result in a more peaceful world.
Hopefully, the Pope's recent invitation to the Vatican, will be accepted by Islamic religious reps for a discussion of the current tragic clash of civilizations. I sincerely doubt the clerics on either side will decide to voluntarily "defrock" for the greater good of mankind. <g>...that would truly be a miracle.
