Grand Rapids - The project manager for a new hotel Alticor is building in Grand Rapids says almost all of the high end hotel furniture will be made in China.

Bert Crandell says it would have been much more expensive to buy furniture made in Michigan for the new JW Marriott hotel downtown.

Even though the Hekman Furniture Company in Grand Rapids is outsourcing the job, Heckman will do the engineering, quality control and delivery.

Crandell says former Alticor President and current candidate for Governor Dick DeVos had no part in the decision to buy furniture made in China.

“There is no association. Dick DeVos has never seen our model on furniture so he's totally disengaged from this hotel and any decision made on it,” says Crandell.

Last month Hekman was selected to provide the furniture for the new hotel. The same day the company announced it is closing its Grand Rapids plant and eliminating 60 jobs.
