I'm also one of those who never turn the modem off except to reset it when the connection is lost for any reason -- by unplugging it for a minute or two. All as recommended by Qwest, the supplier of the modem.

Robert I have left my Verizon DSL modem at my office on for the last three years and have not had a problem....

Let me add my name to the shutting off during severe storms. I have also lost hardware to a near strike. Killed my dialup modem a few years ago. Now I unplug everything from the wall during the approach of an imepnding storm.
