@the Rand -- trotsky, 13:55:04 09/21/06 Thu
the Rand is back in plunge mode, now almost at a 3-year low. it looks now like the possible e-wave interpretation i recently offered here regarding the Rand was quite correct.
you can get the prayer rugs out now - so far this year, Rand weakness has almost always led to weakness in gold shortly afterwards. as i've mentioned, there really is no good reason for the two to track all the time, especially as SA's huge trade deficit should continue to weigh on the Rand, and that has obviously little to nothing to do with gold.
imo the major reason why there has been some correlation is that often the same hedge fund players that are playing emerging markets currencies also play the commodity futures. thus liquidations in one corner of their speculative universe can lead to liquidations in another, since they're all leveraged up to their eyebrows (too much easy money from the BoJ, Fed, ECB, etc. will usually lead to that).

@recent pressure on pm stocks -- trotsky, 13:18:18 09/21/06 Thu
it appears that the Amarinth hedge fund that just tripped over its NG trades held a number of large positions in various gold stocks as well. this may well explain some of the recent weakness especially in liquid senior and mid tier producer shares - there may have been a bit of forced liquidation at work.

as an aside: the fact that Amarinth was forced to liquidate its NG trades indicates that NG likely made its usual seasonal low here.

@why GSS got clocked so badly -- trotsky, 10:49:31 09/21/06 Thu
in yesterday's trading, it looked at first as if GSS was going to resist the decline, but then it suddenly plummeted.

here is why - one of the Prestea shafts was badly damaged by nearby blasting activities by illegal miners on the property:

yet another serious setback for GSS
