I think it happened now because the technology of sales and public relations have advanced to the point to where Americans can be sold anything. We really need some OBJECTIVE tests that politicans have to pass before they are even allowed to TRY to lead us, or this will happen again. Picture yourself in the position of the Rove-type kingmaker. You want a guy who looks good on TV, is congenial and gregarious, and can learn scripts - you won't let him wing it often. You also want a guy that's not smarter than you, because you're putting him in a position of power, but you want to maintain control. A guy without any real ideas of his own.
