The problem with defining what's allowable and what isn't is in the progress from the general to the specific. As Perot used to say, "the devil's in the details." Smacking someone in the back of the head with a phonebook leaves no marks or permanate damage, but I promise, it hurts. The same can be said for needles under the fingernails or "waterboarding." Ask any of our thousands of service members who have gone through E&E training (Escape and Evasion) or some survival courses. Probably the worst part of such questioning sessions was the anticipation, knowing the (ahem) "discomfort" was coming, and doing the verbal dance beforehand to try to avoid it.
