S2,

<Ortiz became the first player to hit home run No. 51 of a season at Fenway since Mickey Mantle did it for the Yankees exactly 50 years ago, on Sept. 21, 1956...>

He did indeed - and, he hit #52 in the late innings. Both baseballs were returned to him, one by a little kid who caught it on the fly, and one by a total Red Sox Nation rabid fan in his late twenties. They sat on either side of Ortiz during the press conference. He did it all without steroids and he hit them against a potential Cy Young winner for the Twins. It's kind of a bitter sweet ending for the season, but it couldn't happen to a finer man!

One other bit of Nation trivia - the record was held by Jimmy Fox and was set in 1938 on the day of the 1938 Hurricane which wiped out most of the New England coast line.

Wait'll next year. Your Tigers are in a nail biter!
