We must also try harder to enhance a program that is showing success, that embeds U.S. units within Iraqi units and helps them fight. These special U.S. units need more men, and soon.

Well, someone on the left if finally saddling up to catch the "clue train", but they still haven't hopped aboard..

Because the stated objective above is just a modification of a current Bush program. "Trying harder" is difficult to do when you're trying to force water down the "horse's throat" as opposed to leading them there so they will recognize their own thirst and drink on their own.

The rest of Ms. Rubin's proposals are also rather vague (perhaps intentionally so), without providing a framework for how to achieve those goals..

Everyone, except the most twisted machiavellian, would like the Israelis and Palestinians to make "nice-nice" and live together peacefully. But there's this inconvenient problem of the Palestinians having elected a government who's very mission statement is the destruction of the nation with whom we'd like them to negotiate.

And what does Ms. Rubin propose as "revising our policy" towards Iran? Are we now supposed to permit them to complete the nuclear fuel cycle and develop nuclear weapons? Is this supposed to stabilise the region?

It's difficult to stabilize our policies with Iran when their current leadership is led by a fellow who's public pronouncements state that it is his agenda to DESTABILIZE the world and usher in the advent of the Mahdi.

We cannot formulate our policies from a position of how we think it should be. Our policies must reflect the realities that are already in place and seek to alter them to our advantage.
