I do see your point but I don't see it to be as big of a problem as you seem to think it is.

"but discussions of issues in a public forum (everyone can read, and for the most part anyone can post) shouldn't be free from reply."

There is no 'reply' limit imposed by a notoorabout, since you can post any comments to the thread or to any of the other posters on the thread.

"Broad is the path: Its only human and occasionally adds color and fun. There is broad lee way given to kidding around, yanking of chains, pulling of legs, teasing, needling, splashing in puddles, poking fun, or poking with darts and thorns, blowing off steam. etc. That can be intended for giggles or it can be a persistant picking at other people's scabs that gets old. Some people can be very creative at cruelty. Being on opposing sides of a viewpoint does not justify cruelty. I don't remember you engaging in much of that so I ask you to view the dynamics as an objective observer.

I cannot imagine how discussion on issues would be limited by 'notoorabouts,' only that the path may be narrowed to eliminate contact that is personally offensive for at least one poster. I have agreed to a couple of no toorabouts (it is best when they are mutual and voluntary btw) and it has never limited my ability to say anything I thought was important on a thread where I am a member.
