The AMA already has that power. They are charged with, amongst other things, making sure that the quacks, charlatans and bad docs are flushed from the system. Yet they spend most of their energy in making sure that nurses don't get too much authority to do procedures with the oversight of a doctor. Or limiting the nuber of med students in a given year. Important health issues like that.

And teachers unions are notorious for rewarding seniority over performance.

The teachers unions are a lot closer to the AMA than to government regulators. Almost the same thing. What are you talking about?
