We are close to the end of the armed phase of conflict in the ME. The terrorists are being isolated by the leaders of Islamic countries like Pakistan. It seems like every headline and speech about Palestine clearly shows they can't make it much longer without US aid. Hamas is ready to capitulate since they can't run a government with no money. The $50 million from Iran is chicken shit, compared to the billions they were receiving from the US. They are begging for our help right now. Bush keeps dangling the olive branch and saying that once the unity government recognizes Israel, full economic aid will be restored. I think the war in S Lebanon was an absolute decimation of Hezbelloh. Israel knocked the shit out of them, with Hezbelloh launching thousands of ineffective weapons at Israel. Maybe it was my imagination, but Isreal did billions worth of damage to Lebanon and they were left unscathed. I would call that a crushing victory. Hezbelloh even said they would turn over the other 20,000 rockets once the Lebanese government had control of the security. Iran is gaining credibility in the peace process. I see it every day now as the preposterous threats by Iran are now being dismissed by the rest of the world. With oil prices slipping, it would behoove Iran to start reconciling with the world since their efforts to build a risk premium in the energy market is completely far fetched and can no longer be taken seriously. I think that Iran will quickly drop the nuclear enrichment once they are guaranteed "protection" from the West. As if we have any interest in invading the gatekeeper to the Persian Gulf, which holds 100 million feisty Muslims. Everybody is better off to withdraw threats of force to let the Palestinians get a decent meal if they will back off the Israelis and accept peace. If they can live with the balance of power in Israel, all the pieces fall into place. All wars have an end, this one will too. I think the magnaminous gestures by Pakistan, Iran, Palestine, and the US are suggesting that peace is around the corner. That would be fine with all the Iraqis who must be tired of the killing in their country.
