The US is pro Israel for many reasons, including the fact that the WWII Allies set up Israel in the Holy Land. And not the least of which is that Jewish money in large part finances both parties and is interwoven with the corporate hierarchy of the country, from the left to the right. But Israel is not a monolith. In fact Israel is split like the US is in terms of being dovish and hawkish. Indeed, Israel has usually be safest when it has been dovish (Carter and Clinton both made peace which lasted for awhile), though the Palestinian radicals have always ruined the peace treaties. So then Israel must strike, and are usually very effective at striking. But war leads to more war. These age-old religious and cultural rifts now combine with the new GOP (Gas and Oil Party) run by Bush-cheney, two oilmen who care more about oil than anything else. So our addiction to Arab oil makes us particularly vulnerable, literally throws gasoline on the fire, and some of that very same oil money we may goes to finance terrorism against us. So if we can neutralize religious extremism and get off Arab oil we will be in much better shape.
