The Sharia court was going to decide Divorce settlements, child custody cases, child support payments, and settle disputes if possible about inheritances.... If one of the people disagreed they could go and appeal to a regular court but the decisions based on Sharia law would have been legal.

Canadian Muslim women were having none of that....

For any alternative court system to have a chance of working, it would have to be agreed to by the participants, and could only apply to civil matters. No way it could work otherwise.
A good portion of the sharia law advocates want it to apply to Muslims period. In Canada, France, Britain, or any country that would be dumb enough to agree to it. Steal? You lose a hand. Commit adultery and you're female? Die. Use or deal drugs? Death penalty.

Others may do as they choose. Here we have one law. It may vary a bit depending on exactly where you live, but it applies to all in that jurisdiction.

When I opened my brokerage account, I agreed to arbitration instead of resolving disputes through the courts. Such a religious resolution system would have to be similar.
And HMOs often require arbitration as a condition of joining. This is civil law, which is where you would stop it. They want criminal matters also covered. No way.

I don't think we need to worry about appearing in a sharia court to pay traffic tickets.
I don't think we need worry about sharia courts deciding divorces either. The women of this country would revolt.
