I think Carter would have gotten concessions quicker from Gorbachev.

Carter would have gotten the concessions without having to buy $1000 toilet seats and $1000 hammers.

Carter deserves a lot of credit for ending the COld War. He set it all up for Reagan with his SALT II talks and sincere diplomacy. He also helped beat the Soviets in Afghanistan, ironically doing so with the help of Bin Laden and crew. That was under Carter not Reagan, right? I just remember Charlie Wilson around 1980 organizing the arming and training of Mujeheddin.

btw, Did you know that when Reagan made his famous Berlin Wall speech the Soviet Union was already over? It was largely symbolic. They were going to tear the wall down anyway. SO a case of symbol over substance.

And no, over-spending on the MX Missile was not what beat the Soviets.
