the prior ability to "pre-ban" users on SI is not the same thing as "pre-approve to post" that is under consideration. Under consideration? You gotta be kidding me! What was the switch to "no pre-bans" for, then? We don't have enough tinpot dictators on the site? Pre-bans were used to accomplish the same effect as "prior approval".

Pre-approval sounds like it's effectively the same as pre-banning. The only functional difference is that some potential pre-banees would be overlooked if they didn't apply to post. The outcome is still that specified posters would never be allowed to make the first post. The winds of censorship sure blow across SI these days. It just takes many forms.

In the area of free speech, which I would expect "all" moderators to support, the biggest pretenders are the greatest offenders. By that I mean, those who would pretend to be broad minded are actually the ones most apt to restrict opinions with which they do not agree. What is really offensive about some moderators is their propensity to simultaneously ban and place on ignore without any reasonable attempt at explanation. "Go start your own thread", is at best, a weak and worthless attempt at justifying a ban or an ignore IMO.
