The principle that guides a Christian's use of earthly/material things is that even though things are lawful, not everything is profitable. It was wrong to be mastered by any thing even if not expressly forbidden (1 Corinthians 6). Who smokes who isn't mastered by it? That goes for so many things that are used excessively, like alcohol, junk food, the pursuit of money. As soon as it controls you, you've lost yourself to it. I know this from personal experience.
